You probably remember a few months ago, Facebook brought in a load of new features, including the not-so-popular feature called the News Ticker.
Well Facebook have now started including ads into the Ticker. Generally they seem to be sponsored social stories (so when the advertiser is trying to appeal to friends of fans) such as friends liking pages or using particular apps.
I only started noticing it come to fruition on my own ticker this week, and so far I have only seen it with one advertiser. But we will see what comes of it.
Facebook’s news ticker was not particularly popular when it launched, and few of the critics seem to have piped down about it. I do wonder whether adding in some ads there will do anything to change their opinion. Probably not.
I do have to say though, the one thing I have really liked about the ticker is that it seems to not take anything about Edgerank into account. For those of you that don’t know, Edgerank is Facebook’s system for what does and doesn’t show up in your news feed. And in the ticker, there seems to be pretty much no consideration for it. So everything shows, although only for very sort periods of time.
The one thing I like about this is that pages which I have liked recently which have a fairly low edge rank score for me, I can still get access to their updates through the ticker. I have liked a lot of pages and I don’t really think I’d ever be keen on visiting each and every page individually. So the ticker lets me see what’s happening on some of these pages.
What are your thoughts? Facebook advertisers – have you tried using the ticker sponsored stories yet?
